Get help straightaway

If you or someone you know is in crisis or despair it is important to get help straight away, particularly if you or the other person is considering self-harm or suicide.


If you don’t feel you can keep yourself, or the other person safe, seek immediate assistance:

  • go to any hospital A&E department
  • call 999 and request an ambulance if you can’t make it to your nearest A&E department


If you need support right now and don’t wish to go to A&E you can also try the following options:


  • Call Lifeline (Northern Ireland only) free of charge on 0808 808 8000. Lifeline is open 24 hours a day, all year round.
  • Call Samaritans on 116 123 free of charge. If you are happy to wait 24 hours, you can also email for email assistance.
  • Contact your GP or GP Out of Hours team for an emergency appointment
  • Use can use the self-assessment tool for additional tools and support including things you can do right now to help you feel better.
